Studiocidal Transmissions from Planet Fascista

With this other oddball 7", we keep kindled the One by One fire with the waning hope that one day the former members will catch our signal and release the mythical discography CD. This one features a "studiocide" ("Silent Consent" and "Virtual Reality '93") and a "live evil" side ("The Monsters Almost Look Human Now," "Making Bacon," and "Nazi Raus"). Regardless of how you feel about live recordings, this is One by One, so it doesn't matter, but I do have to apologize for the abused condition of the vinyl being ripped here. Quinientos Años

I've been putting this off for too long. This is a repost of the "In the Spirit of Total Resistance" 2X7"-- one of my all time favorite comps. Seven bands assembled to attack Man's inhumanity and celebrate the 500 years of resistance enacted by indigenous peoples of the west, from Canada to Puerto Rico. The brutality is amply provided by Crudos, Huasipungo, Man is the Bastard and One by One, while Jonestown, Pollution Circus, and Dogfight inject a balancing dosage of eclecticism. In true repost fashion, the tracks have been re-ripped at 320, and photos of the entire layout and 60 page book have been made available.

Don't Let The Bastards Grind You Down

As requested, I went ahead and ripped a couple of One By One 7"s, and Mike generously contributed rips of their 12". The "Fight" 7" is one of my all time favorite EPs, drawing on tons of UK punk and hardcore traditions, but of course sounding like something quite all its own. Two deadly forces are conspiring: rage and intelligence. The same is true for the other two records posted here, but unfortunately the vocals are more subdued (both by Micky and the recording) by comparison (some of this has to do with the absence of Karin's vocals). Either way, this is classic hardcore/punk that should never be forgotten. It seems that the long-promised One By One discography CD has been back-burnered, as Micky is focusing on his fiction writing.

One By Sedition

This is a pretty odd ball 7", but that only makes it doubly worth a post! One way to look at this is to call it a One By One/Sedition split 7". A more precise description would be a One By One live 7" with a (badly) studio(?) recorded Sedition track. It was a 40th birthday gift for "Le Vieux" (depicted above); Sedition was supposed to play at this gig and be a more substantial part of the final output, but ended up breaking up too early. The good news is that the One By One tracks sound pretty damn intense (Keep in mind this is coming from a HUGE One By One fan who is not much of a live recording fan) and the Sedition track rules like all of their stuff did/does, even with the muddy recording. Let's see, what am I forgetting?... The 1b1 set was recorded in a farmhouse near Tours, France and includes a cover of "Police Bastard."

Boredom & Bullshit

Compilations don't get much download attention, but you'll just have to trust me on this one. Unlike a lot of comps, "The Boredom & The Bullshit" (Refusenik Records, 1996?) is nonstop entertainment from start to finish. Just about everything great about the nineties DIY situation is represented here both in the music, as well as the physical product. There are great, pissed off bands all of whose styles move away from the typical eighties mode, a homemade cover, a huge booklet, and less than desirable production values. The final say is in the music, and like I said, all 10 bands deliver. Every segments of that "scene" is represented, from the unheard of (Marker), to the overlooked (Manfat), to the infamous (One By One, Voorhees, etc.). An outstanding compilation!

A Little Gender Bender

Depending on the way you experienced the nineties, this compilation represents either everything significant, or everything that sucked about that decade. "This Inheritance Must Be Refused" showcases a wide assortment of bands, artists, and writers of yester-decade who had something to say about gender politics. I have a soft spot for this era, and as whiny and "PC" as some lyrics and zines were, I find myself marveling at the experimentation that went on, as well as the almost obsessive DIY effort that went into many releases. That mania is ever-apparent on this one-sided 12" both musically and in the layout and content of the booklet (see scans uploaded below). As far as the bands go, this comp is worth the download simply because there's a One By One track on it, but Citizen Fish fans and Spitboy completists have a reason to get excited too! (The spoken-style vocals on Spitboy's track are a little unnerving, but I guess that's the point?!). An interesting, if inconsistent listen, and a quintessential artifact of a fast-fleeting moment in our history.
